TSMC starts making 4-nanometer chips in Arizona with $6.6 billion grant from U.S.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co has started producing 4-nanometer chips for U.S. clients in Arizona, marking a milestone in the Biden administration’s semiconductor efforts. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo revealed a $6.6 billion grant to TSMC’s U.S. unit for chip production. TSMC will also invest $25 billion more in Arizona and produce 2-nanometer chips by 2028. The U.S. aims to produce 20% of top logic chips globally by 2030.
In addition, Commerce awarded $407 million to Amkor Technology for a $2 billion semiconductor packaging facility in Arizona. The plant will package chips for autonomous vehicles, 5G/6G, and data centers, with Apple as a key customer. The facility will complement TSMC’s operations in the region, boosting semiconductor production in the U.S.
