TSMC fourth-quarter profit beats expectations on strong AI chip demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) exceeded expectations in fourth-quarter revenue and profit due to high demand for advanced chips used in AI applications. Net revenue was 868.46 billion New Taiwan dollars ($26.36 billion), with net income at NT$374.68 billion. TSMC’s profit surged 57% from the previous year, with revenue up 38.8%.

TSMC’s high-performance computing division, including AI and 5G applications, contributed 53% of revenue, driving sales in the fourth quarter. The company reported record-breaking annual sales of NT$2.9 trillion. Despite potential headwinds in 2025 from US restrictions on semiconductor shipments to China, TSMC expects continued revenue growth driven by AI applications.

TSMC’s revenue from AI accelerators is forecasted to double in 2025, with strong demand continuing as a key enabler of AI applications. The company anticipates another strong year ahead, with significant revenue growth expected. Taiwan-listed shares of TSMC rose 81% in 2024 and continued to trade higher on Thursday. European semiconductor stocks also saw gains on the Euronext Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
