TSX closed lower due to interest rate concerns, energy stocks rose on higher oil prices

The Canadian market closed lower on Friday due to rising bond yields and reduced expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Canadian employment data showed a significant increase of 91,000 jobs in December, with the unemployment rate dropping to 6.7%. In the U.S., non-farm payroll employment surged by 256,000 in December, with the unemployment rate decreasing to 4.1%. Energy stocks rose as oil prices increased after U.S. sanctions on Russia. Several stocks, including Rogers Communications, Shopify Inc, and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, closed lower, while Aritzia Inc climbed nearly 20% on strong results.
