Jobless claims in the U.S. rise, with continuing claims at highest level since November 2021.

Initial jobless claims in the U.S. rose to 223,000, up by 6,000 from the previous week’s level of 217,000. Economists had expected a smaller increase to 220,000. The four-week moving average also increased to 213,500. Continuing claims climbed by 46,000 to 1.899 million, the highest level since November 2021. Despite low layoffs, the difficulty in finding new work is reflected in the continued claims data. California fires contributed to the rise in jobless claims, but overall levels remain consistent with relatively few layoffs.
