Some Meta social media users found themselves refollowing President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and first lady Melania Trump after unfollowing them when Trump took office for a second term. Despite unfollowing multiple times, users reported being automatically refollowed without consent.

Official White House social media accounts transition to new elected officials with each presidential administration change. Meta users expressed frustration over being refollowed by the accounts of the president, vice president, and first lady, even after intentionally unfollowing them.

Meta did not immediately respond to inquiries, but communications director Andy Stone clarified that follow requests from Biden’s administration were carried over to the Trump administration’s accounts. Stone noted that changes in account ownership may cause delays in follow and unfollow requests being processed.

American singer Demi Lovato shared a screenshot of her unintentionally following Vice President JD Vance on Instagram. Other users also reported being automatically followed by first lady Melania Trump without consent, prompting confusion and frustration among Meta users.

Social media users typically follow accounts to see their posts with a single click. The number of followers an account has determines the reach of their messages. Users expressed concerns over their accounts being automatically refollowed by official White House accounts without their consent.
