Chinese social media app RedNote is gaining popularity with over 500,000 TikTok users joining in protest against a potential ban in the US. Known as Xiaohongshu in China, it is a lifestyle platform for users to share recommendations and daily life.

RedNote is often compared to Instagram and is a popular search engine in China for beauty, fashion, travel, and food topics. With over 300 million monthly active users, it offers a unique interface displaying multiple posts simultaneously.

Co-founded by Miranda Qu and Charlwin Mao in 2013, RedNote has shareholders like Alibaba, Tencent, and Temasek. Its founders have significant personal wealth and the app is considered a potential IPO candidate.

While primarily used by Chinese users, RedNote is now adjusting to accommodate English-language content following an influx of TikTok users. The company sees this as an opportunity to expand globally, similar to the success of TikTok.

RedNote’s executives are eager to capitalize on the sudden surge in attention to achieve international popularity. The company is working on moderating English content and building translation tools to cater to a broader audience.
