While Apple faces Indonesia ban, Chinese smartphone maker Honor enters

Huawei spinoff Honor plans to launch smartphone sales in Indonesia by March, joining Oppo, Xiaomi, and Transsion in the country. Apple’s iPhone 16 is banned in Indonesia for not meeting domestic production requirements. Honor aims to offer 30 products, including a folding phone, by the end of the year.

Indonesia requires smartphones to have 40% locally sourced components. Honor, with an office in Indonesia, is working with a local manufacturing partner. The country is the world’s fourth-largest by population and a key market in Southeast Asia for smartphone shipments. Honor aims to open 10 stores in Indonesia this year.

Oppo, Xiaomi, and Transsion lead smartphone shipments in Indonesia. Samsung and Vivo hold the fourth spot. Honor plans to hire predominantly local staff in Indonesia. The company, spun off from Huawei, aims to go public. Honor sees Indonesia as a key market for long-term growth.
