Sony reported a significant jump in gaming sales for the fiscal third quarter, with revenue at 4.41 trillion Japanese yen ($28.6 billion) and operating income at 469.3 billion yen. The company raised its full-year sales forecast to 13.2 trillion yen and operating profit outlook to 1.34 trillion yen, citing strong sales in its game and network services division.
In the December quarter, Sony sold 9.5 million units of its PlayStation 5 console, up from 8.2 million a year ago. The company noted an increase in sales of both console and non-first-party game titles, with sales totaling 237.9 billion yen in the fiscal third quarter. The holiday season is a key period for Sony’s gaming hardware business.
Nintendo reported weaker-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter and slashed its forecast for the Switch console. The company teased a successor to the Switch, called Switch 2, with more details set to be revealed on April 2. Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro, released last year, is an upgraded version of the PS5 console, which has been on the market since November 2020.
