Consumer sentiment in the U.S. took an unexpected hit in February, dropping to 67.8 from 71.1 in January, the lowest level since July 2024. Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.3 percent, the highest since November 2023, while long-run inflation expectations increased to 3.3 percent. Consumers are concerned about high inflation returning within the next year, with surveys director Joanne Hsu noting this significant rise is rare. The current economic conditions index fell to 68.7, and the consumer expectations index dropped to 67.3 in February. This data reflects growing anxiety among consumers about the economy.
