Alibaba-affiliate Ant uses Chinese, U.S. chips to cut AI costs
From CNBC: 2025-03-24 01:10:00
Ant Group, affiliated with Alibaba, is using a mix of Chinese and U.S.-made semiconductors to build more efficient AI models, reducing training time and costs. The company has also announced upgrades to its healthcare AI solutions, used by major hospitals in China, with models from DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Ant.
According to Bloomberg, Ant Group has used chips from Alibaba, Huawei, and Nvidia for training AI models, but now relies more on alternatives like Advanced Micro Devices and Chinese chips. The U.S. has restricted China’s access to advanced semiconductors, impacting AI development. Ant Group declined to comment on the matter.
The use of a mixture of experts, tapping into multiple networks, allows AI models to be trained with less compute power. Ant Group’s ability to use lower-cost hardware for training its MoE models has led to a 20% reduction in computing costs. The company operates Alipay, a major mobile payment app in China, founded by Jack Ma.
