Bayer Ordered To Pay About $2.1 Bln In Georgia Roundup Cancer Verdict

A jury in Georgia, U.S. ordered Bayer to pay $2.1 billion to a plaintiff who claimed Roundup weedkiller caused his cancer. The verdict includes $65 million in compensatory and $2 billion in punitive damages. The plaintiff, John Barnes, developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup for over two decades. Glyphosate-based Roundup was introduced by Monsanto in 1974. The U.S. EPA found no risks to human health when used correctly, but the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer labeled glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” Bayer had previously settled many Roundup cases for around $10 billion.
