Celo transitions from layer-1 chain to Ethereum layer-2 protocol, offering one-second blocks, sub-cent transaction costs, and gas in USDT and USDC. The transition was proposed in 2023 and completed after block production shifted to the new network, based on OP technology stack and optimistic rollups. Optimistic rollups bundle transactions off the main blockchain to reduce congestion and lower fees, improving security and scalability.

Migrating to Ethereum L2 enhances Celo’s security and scalability, anchoring transactions to Ethereum for battle-tested security and decentralization. The transition to OP tech stack enables deeper composability with Ethereum-native apps and protocols, simplifying the system with 365,000 fewer lines of code. The upgrade preserved Celo’s chain history and increased liquidity by moving the token to Ethereum, aligning Celo as a fully Ethereum layer 2.
