An outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has been confirmed on FirstFarms’ farm in Plavecký Stvrtok, Slovakia, affecting 3,487 animals. The Slovak authorities have activated their outbreak contingency plan to contain the infection and vaccination of animals is underway. This is the first outbreak in FirstFarms’ history but the fifth in Slovakia this year. All safety regulations have been implemented at the company’s eight farms in Slovakia, with continuous testing for FMD. The consequences for FirstFarms are still uncertain, but they are fully livestock insured and hope to receive support from national schemes and the EU. Foot and mouth disease is a serious infectious disease affecting cloven-hooved animals.
