Exxon Mobil is investing $100 million to upgrade its Baton Rouge chemical plant to produce high-purity isopropyl alcohol for the tech industry. The move is in response to the growing demand for specialized chips used in advanced artificial intelligence systems. The upgrade will be completed by 2027 to meet the needs of U.S. tech companies building data centers and developing in-house chips for AI training. Production will focus on U.S.-based customers to maintain purity levels and minimize risks associated with international shipping. Exxon has not disclosed any new customer agreements for the isopropyl alcohol supply. U.S. companies have previously sourced this chemical from Taiwan and Japan due to domestic suppliers not meeting their requirements.
