GlobalFoundries and Taiwanese chipmaker UMC mull potential merger, sources say

Taiwan’s United Microelectronics and U.S.-based GlobalFoundries are in talks for a possible merger to create a larger U.S.-based chipmaker with a global manufacturing presence. The move comes amid U.S. efforts to bolster its semiconductor supply chain and compete with China. The merged company could rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
GlobalFoundries has a market capitalization of $20.41 billion, while UMC is valued at $16.90 billion. Shares of UMC closed slightly higher at 44.65 Taiwanese dollars, while GlobalFoundries also ended the day with a marginal increase. Both companies are yet to comment on the potential merger.
