How much Bitcoin does the US hold, and where did it come from?

The US government holds 198,109 Bitcoin worth $17.7 billion, mainly from criminal cases. Some will go to the “Strategic Bitcoin Reserve” created by Trump. The largest seizure was 69,370 BTC from Silk Road in 2020. In 2022, 94,636 BTC were seized from Bitfinex hacker Lichtenstein. In March 2022, 51,351 BTC were seized from Silk Road hacker Zhong. US sold 9,861 BTC from Zhong’s seizure for $215.7 million in 2023. The remaining Bitcoin from Zhong’s forfeiture was not liquidated as planned. The White House plans to explore acquiring more Bitcoin for the reserve without cost to taxpayers.
