ING Groep is in early discussions with Italy’s Banca Popolare di Sondrio for a potential takeover, challenging BPER Banca’s 4.3 billion euro offer in February. Unipol, a major shareholder in both banks, hinted at a foreign bid for Sondrio. Sondrio, with defense advisers Bank of America and Morgan Stanley, plans to return 1.5 billion euros to shareholders to fend off BPER. ING eyes growth in major European countries including Italy, offering a 4% return for new deposit accounts.
