South African mining company Ndalamo Resources has acquired the Wonderfontein coal mine in Mpumalanga, South Africa from Umsimbithi Mining. The mine operates at a peak mining rate of 4.2 million tonnes per annum and is expected to continue operations until 2030. The acquisition provides Ndalamo with operational independence and growth opportunities.

Ndalamo CEO Shammy Luvhengo stated that the acquisition strengthens their portfolio and marks a significant milestone in their growth strategy. The company aims to maintain profit margins, introduce new investments, and explore markets beyond Eskom. While coal remains their core business, they are also exploring diversification into new commodities and alternate energies.

In January 2025, South African coal and iron ore exporters are considering finalizing investment agreements with Transnet to repair essential rail lines and improve shipping capabilities. The agreements are worth billions of rand and aim to enhance logistics for the mining industry. Ndalamo’s acquisition of the Wonderfontein mine aligns with their vision for a resilient and socially responsible business.
