UK NCA officer charged with Bitcoin theft of $75,000, now worth $4.2 million

An NCA officer in England and Wales faces charges for allegedly stealing Bitcoin worth $75,000 in 2017. The 50 Bitcoin is now valued at over $4.2 million. The officer will appear in court on April 25 for 15 offenses related to the theft and possession of criminal property.
In December 2024, the NCA seized $26 million in cash and crypto, arresting 84 people in a global anti-money laundering operation. Some crypto addresses targeted had links to Garantex. The founder of the Russian exchange was arrested in India and awaits extradition to the US for criminal charges.
The UK government plans to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets in 2025 after the Labour government’s election win. Crypto remains popular in the UK, with Coinbase approved to operate by the financial regulatory body. British crypto users eagerly await the new regulations for the industry.
