UPS is temporarily closing its Swan Island package facility in Portland, Oregon, and laying off up to 244 workers as part of a network optimization strategy. The facility is set to reopen in 2026 with enhanced technology. The company plans to eliminate 200 sort centers over five years to improve efficiency. UPS had 63 automation projects scheduled for completion by 2028.
