U.S. beef sales to China plummeted after Beijing allowed registrations for American meat facilities to expire, amid a tariff dispute that raised duties on U.S. meat. China did not renew export registrations for U.S. beef facilities, causing uncertainty for exporters and Chinese buyers.
In the week ending March 20, U.S. beef export sales to China were at a mere 54 metric tons, down from over 2,000 metric tons in previous weeks. This decline in demand is affecting U.S. meatpackers like Tyson Foods, who are already facing high cattle prices due to tight supplies.
China’s Commerce Ministry is investigating surging beef imports, as the country deals with an oversupplied market and falling domestic beef prices. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for next week.
