Shares of Japanese automakers are down as President Trump imposes a 25% tariff on US auto imports. This will impact global automakers, including Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. The tariffs will apply to whole vehicles and key components, potentially raising prices for consumers and affecting demand.

The new tariff could cost automakers billions to relocate production and disrupt operations. Vehicles compliant with the USMCA trade agreement will be exempted until a tracing methodology is established. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan’s North America production is covered by the agreement, with 75%, 100%, and 91% of their sales volume in 2024, respectively.
