Apple’s China smartphone shipments slide 9% in first quarter

Apple’s smartphone shipments in China dropped 9% in Q1, the only major manufacturer to see a decline. It shipped 9.8 million phones, with a market share of 13.7%, down from 17.4% in the previous quarter – marking its seventh straight quarter of decline. Xiaomi, however, saw a 40% surge in shipments to 13.3 million phones. The industry-wide shipments grew by 3.3%. Apple’s premium pricing structure hindered it from benefiting from new government subsidies that fuelled growth in the first quarter. The subsidies refund consumers 15% of products priced under 6,000 yuan ($820).
