Asian slump, Cyclone Alfred, slash Ampol’s refinery margins by half

Australia’s top fuel retailer, Ampol, reported a 49% drop in first-quarter refining margins at its Lytton refinery due to Cyclone Alfred and weak refining margins in Singapore. Shares fell 2.1%, hitting their lowest level since April 9. Gasoil refining margins in Asia also collapsed to a three-year low. The impact of the cyclone led to around ten days of lost production at the refinery, with a 5.7% drop in quarterly output. Oil refiners globally are facing profitability challenges due to various factors, including slowing economic growth and the rise of electric vehicles. If the slump in refinery margins continues, Ampol may be eligible for payments under Australia’s Fuel Security Services Payment program. Despite challenges, Ampol’s Australian convenience retail segment saw growth in earnings, driven by improved fuel margins and in-store strategies. Analysts note that the convenience retail business is performing well despite the short-term cyclone impact.
