AT&T’s response to a growing threat spells trouble for customers

AT&T saw a boost in consumer momentum in the first quarter, generating a net income of $4.7 billion, up 19% from the same period in 2024. The company also added 324,000 postpaid phone customers and 261,000 Fiber internet customers.
Amidst these gains, AT&T warned customers of a discount reduction if they pay with a debit card, leading to frustration and threats to switch providers. President Trump’s tariffs are causing concern, potentially increasing costs for smartphones and devices sold by AT&T.
AT&T CEO John Stankey expressed worry about the impact of tariffs on device costs and warned of possible price hikes. Customers are already upgrading their phones in anticipation of higher prices due to the tariffs. Verizon is also considering passing tariff costs to consumers.
