Australia enforces mandatory food and grocery code for supermarkets

Australia’s major supermarkets and wholesalers must comply with a new Food and Grocery Code of Conduct starting April 1, 2025. The ACCC will enforce this code, which applies to entities with revenues above A$5bn. The code protects suppliers, outlines negotiation procedures, and mandates fair treatment. The ACCC has enhanced powers to enforce compliance, with penalties up to $10m per violation or 10% of annual turnover. An online portal allows reporting of violations anonymously.
The ACCC’s focus for 2025/26 includes retail pricing, merger reforms, and competition challenges. In 2024, an interim report showed declining consumer trust in leading supermarket chains Coles and Woolworths. The commission’s investigation led to 20 recommendations for improving market competition. The mandatory food and grocery code aims to ensure fair practices in the industry.
