The California attorney general’s office declined to join Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, stating it did not see how Musk’s actions served the public interest. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, is in a feud with his co-founder Sam Altman over the firm’s future and control. OpenAI wants to remove its nonprofit board for valuable equity, but Musk argues this would threaten its mission. Musk’s lawyer clarified that Musk does not want to buy OpenAI if the nonprofit structure remains unchanged. OpenAI needs to transition to a for-profit model to raise funds from investors, but the California attorney general’s office needs to approve this transition as the state overseer of nonprofits. Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but Musk left before it became a technology star. Last year, Musk sued OpenAI and Altman, accusing them of straying from their mission to develop AI for the good of humanity. OpenAI and Altman denied the allegations, and a jury trial is set for spring next year. Musk also founded his own AI firm, xAI, in 2023, with Altman alleging Musk is trying to slow down a competitor.
