Ehang predicts flying taxis will be a common mode of transport in China in 3-5 years. The company recently obtained certification to operate “civil human-carrying pilotless aerial vehicles.” Initial operations will focus on tourism in Guangzhou and Hefei, with plans to expand to air taxi services in cities like Shenzhen and Hefei.

China’s approval of commercial passenger AAVs showcases its innovation in transportation. Beijing has established itself as a global leader in electric vehicles and autonomous driving, with a clear lead in flying taxis. In contrast, the U.S. has yet to roll out regulations for unmanned aircraft flight, hindering progress in eVTOL technology.

China’s low-altitude economy, including flying taxis, drones, and air shuttle routes, is a major policy goal. The government aims to boost consumption in this sector, with the industry projected to be worth $205 billion by 2025 and double that by 2035. Domestic competition and supportive policies are driving China’s progress in eVTOLs.

Xpeng Aero HT completes a maiden flight of its “Land Carrier” product, combining a van with a quadcopter. The company plans to mass-produce flying cars by 2026, aligning with China’s supportive policy for the low-altitude economy. International competition from companies like Boeing, Airbus, and startups in the U.S. is expected in the eVTOL market.
