Chile’s state-run Codelco saw a 22% increase in copper output in April, reaching 105,000 metric tons, Chairman Maximo Pacheco announced. Despite geopolitical tensions, demand for copper remains strong in key markets like Asia, the United States, and Brazil. The company is actively promoting a new copper smelter and entering the lithium business in Chile.

Pacheco revealed plans for a joint venture with lithium producer SQM in Chile’s Atacama salt flat, pending approval from Chinese regulators. Codelco aims to supply 1.2 million tons of copper annually in a long-term contract to attract investors. The company also plans to enter the lithium market with a new project in the Maricunga salt flat, with a partner to be named soon.
