EigenLayer will start “slashing” restakers on April 17, making it the first feature-complete iteration of the Ethereum restaking protocol. The protocol aims to become the infrastructure for a new generation of verifiable apps and services. Slashing will incentivize restakers with emissions of the EIGEN token, transitioning smoothly for users.

EigenLayer secures third-party protocols against a pool of restaked cryptocurrencies used as collateral. Restaking involves using a token already staked to secure other protocols simultaneously. Slashing is the primary method for securing proof-of-stake protocols, penalizing poor performance or misbehavior. This system allows for a free marketplace for node operators and AVSs to earn rewards.

EigenLayer’s ecosystem is growing with over 30 AVSs live on the mainnet, including EigenDA and ARPA Network. The native token EIGEN offers a flexible option for securing consensus-based protocols. The platform prioritizes onboarding crypto-native apps in DeFi and gaming before expanding beyond Web3. Founder Sreeram Kannan plans to target broader consumer markets in the future.
