Ethereum’s Fusaka hard fork is slated for Q3 or Q4 2025, with the exact timeline yet to be determined. Ethereum Foundation’s Tomasz Kajetan Stańczak revealed the plan to implement the EVM object format (EOF) upgrade, part of the Fusaka network upgrade, amid ongoing controversy. EOF would bring protocol changes for efficiency gains.

EOF introduces an organized bytecode structure for Ethereum smart contracts, enhancing efficiency and developer experience. EIP-4200 proposes replacing dynamic JUMP instructions with CALLF and RETF functions to prevent bugs and malware. The upgrade aims to streamline EVM operation and improve security measures for smart contracts in the Ethereum network.

Despite its efficiency benefits, the EOF implementation faces opposition from some Ethereum developers. Critics argue that EOF adds complexity and unnecessary changes to the system. Concerns include increased attack surface due to tooling upgrades and contract complications. The debate over major EVM changes continues, with opposing views on the value of stability in the Ethereum ecosystem.
