EY changes Nightfall to zero-knowledge rollup design for corporate privacy. New “Nightfall_4” code simplifies architecture for near-instant Ethereum transactions. ZK-rollup model offers instant finality without challenger node. No need to challenge incorrect transactions, leading to faster finality. Fourth major update since 2019 launch, enables private token transfers. OFAC sanctions lifted, easing privacy tech concerns.

Nightfall code open source on GitHub, but remains permissioned for EY clients. Competing with Hyperledger Fabric, R3 Corda, and Quorum. EY blockchain team aims for a single environment supporting payments, logic, and agreements under privacy. Focus on Nightfall_4 deployments before moving to Nightfall_5 development.
