Voice authentication startup Pindrop Security encountered a fake job candidate, “Ivan X,” who used deepfake AI technology to deceive recruiters. The rise of AI-generated profiles poses a growing threat, with Gartner predicting that by 2028, 1 in 4 job candidates globally will be fake.
Cybersecurity and cryptocurrency firms are facing a surge in fake job seekers using AI tools to exploit vulnerabilities. The DOJ recently alleged that over 300 U.S. companies unwittingly hired IT impostors with links to North Korea, sending millions to fund the nation’s weapons program.
Fake job seekers continue to target companies, with even small startups like CAT Labs experiencing a flood of fraudulent applicants. The industry has expanded beyond North Korea to include criminal groups worldwide, posing challenges for firms to verify identities and prevent fraud.
Despite publicized incidents, many hiring managers remain unaware of the risks posed by fake job candidates. BrightHire’s CEO warns that as deepfake technology improves, the issue will become harder to detect. Pindrop Security utilized new video authentication technology to uncover the deepfake fraud of “Ivan X.”
