General Motors CEO Mary Barra tops Detroit Three pay rankings with $29.5 million salary

General Motors Chair and CEO Mary Barra’s compensation increased by 6% last year to $29.5 million due to record profits and performance targets being met. Most other corporate officers saw modest gains. Barra’s compensation breakdown includes stock awards and incentive plan compensation.

GM’s Compensation Committee Chair credited the company’s payment program for contributing to its record financial performance. Barra’s targets and compensation improved from the previous year, putting her at the top in executive compensation among the Detroit Three.

President Donald Trump’s tariff threats could potentially harm company profits and profit-sharing. Auto industry analysts predict a decline in annual profit-sharing checks for UAW-represented workers and bonuses for salaried employees.

Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley’s compensation dropped 6% due to missed performance objectives, particularly in quality improvement. Stellantis paid former CEO Carlos Tavares over $24 million, a decrease from previous years, as production issues and dropping sales affected profits.

GM’s executive compensation strategy aligns with other automakers to hold executives accountable for company performance. Changes were made to the executive variable compensation structure to focus on strategic growth areas, including electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.

The ratio of executive compensation to the median of all GM employees increased to 310-to-1. The median annual total compensation for all GM employees, excluding Barra, rose to $95,111. GM had 162,000 employees as of Dec. 31, 2023, with about half located in the U.S.
