GM cutting jobs, idling Canadian electric van plant

From CNBC: 2025-04-11 14:23:00

General Motors is reducing production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at its plant in Canada, leading to a 20-week shutdown and the elimination of 500 jobs. The decision is not related to President Trump’s tariffs, and GM cites market demand for the adjustment. BrightDrop was expected to generate $1 billion in revenue in 2023 but fell short with only about 2,000 vans sold in 2023 and 2024. Unifor, the Canadian union representing workers at the plant, urges government support to mitigate job loss during the downturn. The idling plans come after reports of hundreds of BrightDrop vehicles stored in Flint, Michigan, raising concerns about the future of the facility without stronger domestic support.
