General Motors (GM) shifts focus from EV drive unit manufacturing to increase transmission production at its Toledo facility in Ohio, supporting light-duty truck production in Indiana. This decision follows plans to boost output at an Indiana plant and is not related to US auto import tariffs. GM aims to align production with market demand.

GM’s Toledo facility was initially slated for EV drive unit production with a $760m investment. However, no retail drive units have been produced at the site. The plant director announced a shift to increase capacity for internal combustion engine propulsion units in response to market needs. One drive unit line will be converted to a transmission line.

GM made adjustments to its EV strategy, delaying EV truck production in Michigan. The company fell short of its goal to produce and wholesale 200,000 EVs in North America in 2024, with actual sales reaching 189,000 units. GM continues to adapt its production plans to align with market demand and manufacturing needs.
