IBM introduced its z17 mainframe designed for AI computing, featuring Telum II processors and Spyre accelerator chips. The units will be available June 18, with a new operating system, z/OS 3.2, coming in Q3. Mainframes power 70% of global transactions, with a focus on security and data privacy.
The z17 follows the successful z16, with consistent revenue growth. Mainframes remain crucial in digital transformation, with organizations relying on them for core applications despite the push towards cloud adoption. Tech leaders see mainframes as key to AI plans, with a focus on modernization and security.
IBM incorporated quantum-safe encryption into the z17 for enhanced resilience. The company engaged customers for testing and workshops ahead of the release. The mainframe’s value endures, with older models like the z15 still in use. Tech leaders recognize mainframes as vital for generative AI applications, with 4 in 5 survey respondents viewing them as essential.
To further expand its AI capabilities, IBM acquired Hakkoda, an AI consultancy. The deal closed on April 2, with financial details undisclosed. The z17 will facilitate the modernization of legacy applications for cloud deployment, leveraging Spyre to power Watsonx Code Assistant for Z on-prem.
