IBM plans to invest $150 billion in the U.S. over the next five years, focusing on quantum computer production. This follows similar pledges from tech giants like Nvidia and Apple. Analysts see the move as a nod to President Trump amid tariff concerns, with $30 billion earmarked for expanding U.S. manufacturing.
IBM operates a large fleet of quantum computing systems, offering performance far surpassing traditional computers. Recent breakthroughs in quantum computing, such as Google’s new chips, have increased industry interest. Google aims for commercial applications in five years, while Nvidia predicts a 20-year wait.
Despite positive revenue forecasts, IBM faced setbacks with 15 government contracts shelved by the Trump administration. The company, with $14.8 billion in cash, spent $1.13 billion on capital expenditure last year. The tech giant’s investment in quantum technology may serve as a shield against trade conflicts.
