Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are gaining attention as their value surges under a new White House administration. Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is a converted version of bitcoin used on Ethereum platforms, with a market cap of $11.3 billion and a trading volume of $209.6 million. Investing $1,000 in WBTC in 2019 would be worth about $25,270 today, a 2,537% increase.
Wrapped bitcoin is pegged to the value of bitcoin but operates on the Ethereum platform. It is a token in the DeFi network, allowing easy interaction with other digital assets like NFTs. Each WBTC coin is backed by an equivalent amount of bitcoin, held in trust by custodians like BitGo. Investors can buy WBTC on decentralized exchanges like Coinbase or Binance.
Experts advise keeping no more than 10% of your portfolio in cryptocurrencies due to their volatility. Licensed brokerages like Robinhood and Fidelity offer crypto trading platforms if you prefer not to use decentralized exchanges. While crypto can be a fun speculative investment, it is not recommended for long-term financial needs like retirement.
