Intel announced that several contract manufacturing customers are planning to build test chips for the company’s forthcoming advanced manufacturing process. The goal is to rival TSMC, despite some setbacks in Intel’s foundry unit development. CEO Lip-Bu Tan aims to reshape Intel and revamp the foundry operation.
The 14A manufacturing process, still in development, includes a new type of chipmaking tool and technology for power delivery. Intel has distributed an early version of the digital design kit needed for successful chip transformation. Test chips are crucial for evaluating new processes before full design commitment.
Intel plans to ramp up its 18A process to high-volume production this year. Initial chip manufacturing with 18A will take place at the research lab in Oregon, with production set to increase at factories in Arizona. Broadcom and Nvidia have previously tested Intel’s 18A process.
