J.B. Hunt Transport Services is experiencing mixed results in the intermodal bid season, with some rate increases and volume growth, but also losing business to competitors. The company reported first-quarter earnings per share of $1.17, beating estimates but lower year over year due to rising trade risks. Intermodal revenue increased by 5% year over year, with record volumes and load growth in the Eastern network.
Despite record volumes, J.B. Hunt’s intermodal segment saw margins decline, with an operating ratio of 93.6%, worse than the previous year. The dedicated segment reported a 4% revenue decline, impacted by severe winter weather. The brokerage unit saw a 6% revenue decline but a decrease in operating loss. Shares of JBHT fell 5.8% in after-hours trading.
The company’s management is still unsure if 2025 will see margin improvement in intermodal operations. Revenue per load declined by 2% year over year, with a focus on negotiating large bids in the upcoming months. Despite challenges, J.B. Hunt is aiming for margin improvement, but the uncertain operating environment due to trade risks complicates the outlook.
