L&T completes India's longest railway tunnel in Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project, reducing travel time significantly.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) achieves a milestone by completing India’s “longest” railway tunnel, Tunnel No. 8, spanning 14.57km on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail link. The breakthrough was made with the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the Himalayan region, named Shakti, excavating 413m per month and using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) for 4.11km.

L&T’s involvement in the project covers packages 2 and 4, reducing travel time on the 125-km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway Line project from seven hours to two. Package 4 includes constructing upline and downline of the railway tunnel, while package 2 involves tunnel excavation, lining, railway and road bridges, and embankments.

L&T’s Whole-Time director S V Desai highlights the breakthrough’s significance in challenging terrain, showcasing dedication and innovation. L&T, a $27bn Indian enterprise, focuses on EPC projects, manufacturing, and services globally. Last month, L&T secured a major contract for residential and commercial towers in Hyderabad and Chennai from the Brigade Group, its largest such project from a private client.

The completion of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail link tunnel signifies a significant achievement for L&T and the RVNL, with the project set to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time for pilgrims on the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage.
