Challenger bank Monzo has launched home insurance in the UK, focusing on contents cover to cater to consumer preference for digital channels. GlobalData data shows low penetration rates for contents insurance, especially among young consumers and renters, presenting a significant opportunity for Monzo.

GlobalData’s 2024 UK Insurance Consumer Survey reveals that only 44.3% of renters have home insurance, with a higher rate of 90.2% for homeowners with a mortgage. Additionally, only 38.4% of adults under 30 who rent have home insurance, indicating a large market opportunity for contents-only insurers like Monzo.

Monzo aims to reach young adults and renters with simple policies offered via its app, requiring only five questions for a quote. The bank estimates that renters could have around £12,000 of belongings unprotected, highlighting the need for contents cover. The policy will be underwritten by Chubb.

Monzo’s entry into the UK home insurance market could potentially boost the bancassurance channel, which has seen modest growth. With 13.7% of consumers purchasing home insurance via banks in 2024, there is a solid customer base for bancassurance. Monzo’s digital policies targeting low penetration rates for contents-only policies seem like a strategic move.
