New York manufacturing activity declined modestly in April, with the general business conditions index improving to a negative 8.1 from a negative 20.0 in March. New orders and shipments decreased at slower rates, with the new orders index rising to a negative 8.8 and the shipments index to a negative 2.9. The number of employees index also increased slightly to a negative 2.6. Prices paid and prices received indexes also saw growth. However, firms expect conditions to worsen in the future, with the index for future business activity dropping to a negative 7.4 from a positive 12.7 in March.
