Nissan is aiming to increase production at its largest American plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, in response to President Trump’s 25% auto tariffs. The facility can produce 640,000 vehicles a year but currently operates below capacity, with plans to add new products and increase domestic content including hybrid production and powertrain components.
Tariffs on imported vehicles have been in effect since April 3, with additional 25% tariffs on auto parts set to take effect by May 3. Nissan is concerned about the impact of these potential parts tariffs on its operations and is hoping for a compromise to minimize the impact on the company’s plans and production.
Nissan has two assembly plants in Mexico that produce a variety of vehicles, with nearly 670,000 units produced in 2024, of which over 456,000 were exported. In the U.S., Nissan has assembly facilities capable of producing over 1 million vehicles annually, with nearly 525,600 vehicles produced in the U.S. in 2024.
The Canton plant in Mississippi produces the Nissan Altima sedan and Frontier midsize pickup truck, with plans to focus on vehicles like the Rogue, Pathfinder, and Frontier for growth. Nissan has lowered pricing on the Rogue and Pathfinder in response to the tariffs and has halted new orders from the U.S. for Mexican-built SUVs for its Infiniti luxury brand.
