Sir Robert McAlpine will lead the £30m construction of Northumbria University’s North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST), featuring satellite manufacturing clean rooms, labs, and workspaces to boost space research collaboration. Completion is expected in late 2026, creating 350 jobs and contributing £260m to the North East England economy.
The UK Space Agency and Lockheed Martin UK Space have provided significant funding for NESST. Northumbria University anticipates the centre will drive innovation, economic growth, and establish the North East as a leader in space technology. Sir Robert McAlpine is enthusiastic about delivering the state-of-the-art facility in Newcastle, aiming to positively impact the local community.
Earlier this year, Sir Robert McAlpine was also selected as the main contractor for a £1.25bn investment in low-carbon steelmaking at the Port Talbot steelworks in the UK. This move further solidifies the company’s position in major construction projects.
