U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that not all proposed multimillion-dollar fees for Chinese ships docking at U.S. ports will be implemented, and they may not be cumulative. The proposals aim to address a lack of shipbuilding in the U.S. Scores of stakeholders submitted feedback on the plan, with implementation potentially delayed until November. Steelmakers and unions support the proposal, but others fear it could harm businesses and supply chains. Maritime experts find the proposal’s language vague, with fees potentially reaching $3.5 million per port call. Senator Bill Cassidy raised concerns about the impact on commodity shipments in Louisiana and the Mississippi River system.
