April 1, 2025 2:20:00 AM:
OpenAI will release an open version of its language model, allowing developers to run it on their hardware. The new “open-weight” model with reasoning will be publicly available, unlike the fully closed GPT-3 and GPT-4. Developer events for GPT-2 will start in San Francisco and later in Europe and Asia–Pacific regions.
OpenAI’s last “open” model was GPT-2 in 2019. Altman wants to ship GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 soon. The AI race heats up with the launch of rival DeepSeek, similar to ChatGPT but cheaper and faster to create. Alibaba and Google also introduced new AI models recently, while Meta’s Llama AI family hit 1 billion downloads.
