A panicked Bitcoin user mistakenly paid a whopping 0.75 BTC ($70,500) in a replace-by-fee (RBF) transaction fee. The transaction, the second RBF attempt, changed the target address and included 0.48 BTC ($37,770) with 0.2 BTC ($16,357) as change. Both transactions are now stuck waiting for confirmation.
The user’s error may have been caused by haste or confusion, leading to a fee of 305,692 satoshis instead of the intended 30.5692 satoshis. Additionally, an extra input was added to the second RBF transaction, including almost 0.75 BTC as part of the fee due to a change address oversight.
RBF is a contentious Bitcoin feature that allows users to replace unconfirmed transactions with new ones featuring higher fees. Miners are incentivized to process transactions with higher fees, leading to conflicts over transaction processing order. Bitcoin Cash has removed RBF due to concerns about double-spending and transaction finality.
