Real ID deadline is May 7. Here’s what to know before you fly

From CNBC: 2025-04-12 08:00:00

Starting May 7, U.S. airports will enforce Real ID requirements. 81% of travelers already have Real ID-compliant identification. Federal and state officials urge travelers to update licenses before the deadline. Airlines are also reminding travelers of the new requirements through various channels.

Real ID is a compliant identification card required for domestic U.S. flights for travelers 18 and over. The ID cards have a gold or black star, or a yellow bear in California, on the top right corner.

If you can’t get a Real ID by May 7, you can use a U.S. passport, green card, or trusted traveler ID as alternatives. A Real ID cannot be used for international travel, but an enhanced ID can be used for travel to Mexico and Canada.

The TSA confirms the Real ID deadline is real and travelers without one may face delays and additional screening at security checkpoints. Arrive at least three hours early for domestic flights without Real ID or an alternative to allow for extra identity verification.
